Description:  (1 hour) Online Self-Paced – Open Enrollment * Have you ever wondered if it is worth the effort to read to infants and toddlers? Perhaps you have assumed that until children develop their own language skills, reading experiences will not be meaningful. But more and more researchers are learning that reading to infants and toddlers can be very beneficial (Whitehurst & Lonigan, 2001). Sharing books and other reading materials with children at a young age can establish a strong foundation for later literacy skills (McLane & McNamee, 1991). When parents and caregivers read to young children early and often, the children see reading as something that is fun to do. They become familiar with the sound of language that is used in books. They learn to turn the pages of books and learn that the print in books has meaning (Rice, Burkes, & Kaplan-Sanoff). Without a doubt, reading to infants and toddlers is a good way to invest your time and energy.

Learning Objective:

  • Identify ways that reading to infants and toddlers is beneficial.
  • Describe how you would share a book with a child who is nine months old.
  • Describe how you would share a book with a child who is eighteen months old.
  • Describe appropriate times to share books with children.
  • Describe a method you could use to be sure that you are reading to each child in your class.
  • Reflect on an example of a book you have shared with a child in your classroom, and how the child responded to the book.

I like the broad based theoretical perspective. Describing important domains such as comprehension, language, and phonological awareness. I also like the way that these big ideas connect with the practice of teaching young children.
