JRR Tolkien is arguably the most notable and inspirational fantasy genre writer of the past century. His works such as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are timeless literary pieces which resonate with adults and children worldwide. The work of JRR Tolkien can be very useful in school-age classrooms to teach the elements of the fantasy genre of literature as well as critical thinking skills, the hero’s journey and more. This course aims to instruct participants in the use of one of Tolkien’s works: The Hobbit along with practical applications and lesson plan ideas.

Learning Outcomes:
  • State some of the benefits of including fantasy literature in their school-age programs
  • Retell the elements of fantasy literature
  • Explain the difference between science fiction and fantasy
  • List three ways to use fantasy fiction in any school-age program
  • Apply the knowledge in this training to incorporate the use of fantasy literature in their school-age program

    LOVED having one of my favorite books as a curriculum! Will definitely have a Tolkien week this summer :)
