Children have many different strengths and weaknesses along with diverse intellectual abilities and personalities. Through observation and recording, child care providers can log and learn what affects children. Learning what affects children will allow providers to care for children properly.

Learning Objective:

  • Develop awareness of the importance of observation
  • Increase knowledge, skills, and strategies to develop accurate and reliable systems of observations and records.
  • Identify ways to become more skilled observers of children.
  • Understand that objective, accurate observation of children occurs:
    • in their natural program setting
    • as they interact with other children, adults, and the environment
    • as they participate in their typical daily program
    • over time
  • Develop strategies to plan for observation in the daily schedule.
  • Reflect on observation notes, daily logs, and children’s work samples to learn about each child.
  • Analyze observation notes, samples, and reflections to better meet the needs of children and families through planned instruction activities.
  • Use observation to assess and document children’s strengths and areas needing improvement.

This course was good for entry level teachers looking for ways to do observation and apply it to assessment. The program was clear, and pertained to the area of study.
