Maurice Sendak has delighted and entertained children with both his illustrations and written words where children are immersed in a world of dreams and imagination. Winner of several children’s literary awards, Sendak created and illustrated many books which can be used for many topics and purposes in the early childhood classroom. This online child care course aims to educate the participant about his life and work as well as the use of his books for promoting creativity, teaching important life lessons and introducing fantasy and fairytale in the early childhood setting.  

Learning Outcomes:
  • Discuss Maurice Sendak's opinion of childhood and how it pertains to early childhood education
  • Analyze sample lesson plans for several age groups
  • Discuss controversial literary bans on In The Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak
  • Apply the elements of teaching fantasy and fairytale to an early childhood program
  • Apply the information regarding promoting creativity and teaching life lessons to an early childhood program
